Observations/Opinions Game 1 vs FAMU

I havent posted anything on the blog in awhile (but I do keep the Bleed Orange & Green facebook up to date) So I decided to do a little write up on each game which is strictly opinion based.

Game 1 vs FAMU

Overall I was pretty impressed with this game. The first team offense literally looked like they could do whatever they wanted and easily marched down the field every possession that they had. This receiving core proved why they could be so dangerous. The offensive line played great as Jacory had a ton of time to throw and the running backs had some holes to run through. Berry looked solid and Lamar Miller is fasssssssssstttttttttt. I wish we could have got a look at Storm this game but he sat out for undisclosed reasons. Good to see Coop out there 2nd half, although, I dont agree with him returning punts after coming off an ACL injury. Oh and once again, if Jacory goes down this year, we are in DEEP trouble.

Special teams looked improved, Bosher sent the ball into the endzone the majority of the kickoffs, and if not to the 5 yard line at least. Kickoff coverage looked solid and improved from last year. I actually like having a variety of kick and punt returners, although, I dunno if they will be rotating all year, but maybe. We will house a couple kick or punt returns this year for sure.

Defense was iffy at times but got the job done. I remember getting frustrated at a couple of long gains by FAMU which was usually a result of missed tackles. We need to improve in that area. The FAMU QB had some running skills and got the best of us a couple of times, which worries me a bit going into the game vs OSU and T. Pryor. Our D Coordinator definitely needs to focus on this along with making tackles. Our D Line looked crazy fast and used nice techniques to get past the OL and pressured the QB most of the night. O.Vernon had an outstanding game, along with the whole DL. LBs were fine, Spence made some good plays. Secondary looked pretty good, got beat a couple times but were solid most of the game. And Ray Ray Armstrong will be a beast, VT had an off game but I am confident he'll be back. We may have the best safety duo in the nation by the end of the year. Oh and Corey Nelms can lay the wood, another big hit on defense this game.

OSU will be our toughest game for sure, Virginia Tech 2nd, and FSU 3rd. I see 3 losses at WORST for this team and obviously an undefeated season at best and we should compete for an ACC title. Clemson is overrated, NC may not have their star players, Pitt is overrated as well (lost to Utah 1st gm) and we know how to prepare for GT now and the rest should be easy. Again, just my opinion.... -Fezz-

5 Star Latwan Anderson Commits to The U!

Per AllCanes.com/blog

Is it too late to ask for a recount regarding 2010 signing day class rankings?

The Miami Hurricanes got a late gift this Wednesday morning when Latwan Anderson, one of the nation's top prospects finally made it official and signed with The U.

The 15th-ranked overall prospect and Ohio product lists Ohio State as his favorite program, but it came down to Miami and West Virginia this morning. Anderson originally committed to the Mountaineers but never signed a letter of intent.

A big reason Anderson went with the Canes was a desire to run track. He placed second in Ohio last year in the 200-meter dash and will take a track scholarship, but will also play football for UM. He will technically 'walk on' to the Miami football team, but could still make an immediate impact as a true freshman.

Miami signed 29 new players last month, but will gladly make room for Anderson on the defensive side of the ball. What was originally thought to be a top fifteen class just got a shot in the arm with the addition of Anderson and could still receive another in the coming weeks.

Top-ranked offensive line prospect Seantrel Henderson verballed to Southern Cal but also hasn't signed his letter of intent. Henderson's final visit before signing day was a trek to Coral Gables over Pro Bowl weekend. Henderson and his family loved UM but went with USC, his long-time front runner.

With sanctions looming in Los Angeles, there's a legit chance Henderson chooses The U when all is said and done. Maybe even more so now with the addition of fellow Midwestern stand out Anderson now on board.

Welcome to The U, Latwan.

Who to keep an eye on NSD...

The Canes aren't in the running for too many more prospects come signing day, but here are some to keep an eye on...

4 star DT J.R. Ferguson is expected to choose between, Miami, Notre Dame, Florida State, LSU, Cal, and Texas Tech

4 star WR Ivan McCartney is expected to choose between, Miami, West Virginia, and Oregon

5 star OT Seantrel Henderson is expected to choose between, Miami, Ohio State, Notre Dame, USC, and Florida

4 star LB Josh Shirley is expected to choose between, Miami, USC, Arizona and Washington (pictured left)

***Per Rivals.com- OL Shon Coleman - Coleman is committed to Auburn, but he could flip to Alabama, Ole Miss or Miami. Coleman has been very quiet, and no one seems to have a good read on him. If he sticks with the Tigers, it wouldn't necessarily be a surprise. Alabama is thought to be the biggest threat to Auburn, but keep an eye on Ole Miss. Coleman emerged as one of the top offensive tackle targets in the Southeast after a great senior season and a terrific showing at the U.S. Army All American Bowl.

***Per InsideTheU.com- Milford (N.Y.) Academy athlete Travon Van verbally committed to Florida in June, but is having second thoughts and will choose between Florida and Miami on signing day.

The 'experts' dont have the Canes as the favorite for any of these prospects so any commit from any of these guys would come a bit as a surprise.... then again NSD is known for its surprises.

Stay tuned tomorrow, as I'll update this blog sometime after 3pm.

Recruting Tidbits 1/31/2010

The U had an important recruiting weekend and came away with a commit. 3 star DT Jeffrey Brown committed to the Canes, another 'sleeper' prospect from Evanston, IL.
Check his scouts.com page.

#1 OT Seantrel Henderson was asked to rate his visit from a 1 to 10, Henderson said, "It was a 10 for sure." Which is good news for Canes fans, we will see what happens on Wednesday.

It was said that LB Josh Shirley was pretty sure he knew where he was headed UNTIL he visited this weekend, now its been said that his visit to Miami has shook things up for him. This could also be good news, we'll just have to wait and see. Randy has been hard after this guy and he would be a great pickup.

DE J.R. Ferguson also visited this weekend. I havent heard much about what he thought, I think its pretty much a long shot we land this guy.

2 days and 12 hours till signing day, lets do this!!! []__[] !!!

Read this amazing article on Canes commit Kevin Nelson

Courtesy of Manny Navarro at Eye on The U.

Kevin Nelson can't contain his excitement. In a week, the Gainesville Sun's Class 6A-3A Player of the Year will be able to put pen to paper, sign his name on a National Letter of Intent and officially call himself a Miami Hurricane.

Kevin Nelson For Nelson, a 6-1, 215-pound middle linebacker, National Signing Day can't come fast enough. Neither can June 12th. That's the day he scheduled to graduate from Gainesville High. Three hours after he takes off his gap and gown, Nelson says, he plans to drive down to South Florida where he'll move in with cousin and future University of Miami teammate Demarcus Van Dyke. Soon after that, Nelson says, he plans on putting on an orange and white jersey with the number 52 on it. That would be the same number of his idol, Canes great Ray Lewis.

Ask Nelson where he'll be come the season opener in September against Florida A&M and he's got a prediction on that, too. He says he'll be starting at middle linebacker, on his way to the ACC Rookie of the Year award and leading the Hurricanes to a national title.

To say Nelson dreams big would be an understatement. But if you ask his coach, his family and his friends, the fact Nelson is making bold predictions about his future is a welcome relief -- because it wasn't long ago that Nelson wasn't sure where he was headed.

A troubled teenager, Nelson had trouble coping with the death of his mother, Bonnie Coleman, who died in 2002 after a long battle with brain and lung cancer. His biological father, Connie, who died last year from a stroke, didn't develop a relationship with him until he was older. Discipline and focus? It's taken time for Nelson to wrestle with that.

"It was crazy, man," Nelson said. "My brother was off to college so it was just me and my mother when I was little. My stepfather, when he was in the picture, was usually off to work. So, I'd come home and take care of my mom when she was sick. Sometimes, I wasn't able to do my homework because I was crying at night, trying to see if my mom was OK. It was hard. Things like that mess up a kid at that age. It takes time for them to learn how to be strong, realize that this happened for a reason. It was a battle. It still is to this day."

Nelson's battle became his aunt Shirley Williams' problem. Thankfully, he says, with his cousins off at college and plenty of room for him in her house, Nelson was able to grow up with plenty of support. He'd watch the Golden Girls with his grandmother, Irene Cudog, and his aunt, and iron out his behavioral issues. In a lot of ways, he says, he looks up to Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon, who grew up with plenty of his own family struggles. He considers the way both grew up "a deep bond."

"On Sunday, the last day of my official visit, we were talking about that," Nelson said. "He told me about how things were hard for him growing up, family members he lost. He told me situations like that prepare you for life, make you stronger. The way I see it, he never quit and ended up great. It took me some time to figure out how life is. In the ninth grade, I finally got control of it. I just turned a whole 180 degree turn and made some success in my life."

Now, Nelson says, he can't wait to go battle for Shannon. And the truth is, the Hurricanes might be stealing a superstar under Florida coach Urban Meyer's nose.

Nelson, rated a four-star recruit by ESPN and the third-best inside linebacker in the country, has developed into a far better player than most expected. He finished his senior season with 141 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions, three forced fumbles and helped Gainesville High to its city championship since 1988. His coach, Ryan Smith, said Nelson and teammate/fellow UM recruit Devont'a Davis (a 6-1, 170-pound cornerback) are the two primary reasons why the program went from 1-8 to 5-5 to 10-2 and its first playoff victory since Clinton Portis was around in 1998.

Kevin Nelson "Great players make great coaches," Smith said. "Miami is getting great players. They led the way for us all year. Their leadership, work ethic and the ability to make plays is phenomenal. If you want to look at one game. Look at the win over Buchholz. We won 14-9. Kevin scored both touchdowns (interception and a fumble recovery) and Devonta intercepts a pass on a two-point conversion at the end of the game to clinch it."

Former UM recruiting coordinator Clint Hurtt jumped on Nelson early. But if you ask Nelson, it was his persistence that got the Hurricanes to offer him a scholarship his junior year after the Gators passed and UCF and Arkansas were the only programs who bit.

"Before Miami even recruited me, I had to call them," Nelson said. "I called Ms. Cindy in the office and got coach Barrow's office number. I kept calling it and calling it until I got coach Barrow on the phone. After that, It just went from there.

"I told him 'I want to be the guy you can count on in fourth down situations, you feel me? Or, the guy you want to put it on his shoulders and be the leader -- the whole season -- of the defense. I don't want to give up no rushing yards, no passing yards and have the DBs and safeties moving, the d-line moving and linebackers making plays.' I told him I wanted to be that guy. He said 'Dang man, I really like the way you're talking.' After that, he fell in love with the way I was talking. I sent him film and two or three weeks later, coach Shannon offered me."

Nelson didn't have to sell himself his senior year. LSU, Florida, and a number of other SEC schools came looking for him. Although the offer to play for LSU "and beat UF every year" was tempting, the Hurricanes stayed on him hard. And soon, UM could be reaping the benefits. With Darryl Sharpton gone, the Hurricanes do not have a bonafide starting middle linebacker. Going into the spring, most expect senior Colin McCarthy to slide over to the middle and Sean Spence, Jordan Futch and Ramon Buchanon to eat up most of the snaps at outside linebacker. Nelson, the only middle linebacker in a class with five outside linebackers, could ultimately find his way into playing time if he catches on quickly.

"I feel like I'm the best linebacker coming in this class -- and I feel like with the guys I've been around and the knowledge I'm going to be receiving it will be something great for the University of Miami," Nelson said. "It's about time for Coach Shannon to get another ring on his finger. I told him I'm going to do everything in my power, with the last breath in my body to get him that championship ring."
