Recruting Tidbits 1/31/2010

The U had an important recruiting weekend and came away with a commit. 3 star DT Jeffrey Brown committed to the Canes, another 'sleeper' prospect from Evanston, IL.
Check his scouts.com page.

#1 OT Seantrel Henderson was asked to rate his visit from a 1 to 10, Henderson said, "It was a 10 for sure." Which is good news for Canes fans, we will see what happens on Wednesday.

It was said that LB Josh Shirley was pretty sure he knew where he was headed UNTIL he visited this weekend, now its been said that his visit to Miami has shook things up for him. This could also be good news, we'll just have to wait and see. Randy has been hard after this guy and he would be a great pickup.

DE J.R. Ferguson also visited this weekend. I havent heard much about what he thought, I think its pretty much a long shot we land this guy.

2 days and 12 hours till signing day, lets do this!!! []__[] !!!

Read this amazing article on Canes commit Kevin Nelson

Courtesy of Manny Navarro at Eye on The U.

Kevin Nelson can't contain his excitement. In a week, the Gainesville Sun's Class 6A-3A Player of the Year will be able to put pen to paper, sign his name on a National Letter of Intent and officially call himself a Miami Hurricane.

Kevin Nelson For Nelson, a 6-1, 215-pound middle linebacker, National Signing Day can't come fast enough. Neither can June 12th. That's the day he scheduled to graduate from Gainesville High. Three hours after he takes off his gap and gown, Nelson says, he plans to drive down to South Florida where he'll move in with cousin and future University of Miami teammate Demarcus Van Dyke. Soon after that, Nelson says, he plans on putting on an orange and white jersey with the number 52 on it. That would be the same number of his idol, Canes great Ray Lewis.

Ask Nelson where he'll be come the season opener in September against Florida A&M and he's got a prediction on that, too. He says he'll be starting at middle linebacker, on his way to the ACC Rookie of the Year award and leading the Hurricanes to a national title.

To say Nelson dreams big would be an understatement. But if you ask his coach, his family and his friends, the fact Nelson is making bold predictions about his future is a welcome relief -- because it wasn't long ago that Nelson wasn't sure where he was headed.

A troubled teenager, Nelson had trouble coping with the death of his mother, Bonnie Coleman, who died in 2002 after a long battle with brain and lung cancer. His biological father, Connie, who died last year from a stroke, didn't develop a relationship with him until he was older. Discipline and focus? It's taken time for Nelson to wrestle with that.

"It was crazy, man," Nelson said. "My brother was off to college so it was just me and my mother when I was little. My stepfather, when he was in the picture, was usually off to work. So, I'd come home and take care of my mom when she was sick. Sometimes, I wasn't able to do my homework because I was crying at night, trying to see if my mom was OK. It was hard. Things like that mess up a kid at that age. It takes time for them to learn how to be strong, realize that this happened for a reason. It was a battle. It still is to this day."

Nelson's battle became his aunt Shirley Williams' problem. Thankfully, he says, with his cousins off at college and plenty of room for him in her house, Nelson was able to grow up with plenty of support. He'd watch the Golden Girls with his grandmother, Irene Cudog, and his aunt, and iron out his behavioral issues. In a lot of ways, he says, he looks up to Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon, who grew up with plenty of his own family struggles. He considers the way both grew up "a deep bond."

"On Sunday, the last day of my official visit, we were talking about that," Nelson said. "He told me about how things were hard for him growing up, family members he lost. He told me situations like that prepare you for life, make you stronger. The way I see it, he never quit and ended up great. It took me some time to figure out how life is. In the ninth grade, I finally got control of it. I just turned a whole 180 degree turn and made some success in my life."

Now, Nelson says, he can't wait to go battle for Shannon. And the truth is, the Hurricanes might be stealing a superstar under Florida coach Urban Meyer's nose.

Nelson, rated a four-star recruit by ESPN and the third-best inside linebacker in the country, has developed into a far better player than most expected. He finished his senior season with 141 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions, three forced fumbles and helped Gainesville High to its city championship since 1988. His coach, Ryan Smith, said Nelson and teammate/fellow UM recruit Devont'a Davis (a 6-1, 170-pound cornerback) are the two primary reasons why the program went from 1-8 to 5-5 to 10-2 and its first playoff victory since Clinton Portis was around in 1998.

Kevin Nelson "Great players make great coaches," Smith said. "Miami is getting great players. They led the way for us all year. Their leadership, work ethic and the ability to make plays is phenomenal. If you want to look at one game. Look at the win over Buchholz. We won 14-9. Kevin scored both touchdowns (interception and a fumble recovery) and Devonta intercepts a pass on a two-point conversion at the end of the game to clinch it."

Former UM recruiting coordinator Clint Hurtt jumped on Nelson early. But if you ask Nelson, it was his persistence that got the Hurricanes to offer him a scholarship his junior year after the Gators passed and UCF and Arkansas were the only programs who bit.

"Before Miami even recruited me, I had to call them," Nelson said. "I called Ms. Cindy in the office and got coach Barrow's office number. I kept calling it and calling it until I got coach Barrow on the phone. After that, It just went from there.

"I told him 'I want to be the guy you can count on in fourth down situations, you feel me? Or, the guy you want to put it on his shoulders and be the leader -- the whole season -- of the defense. I don't want to give up no rushing yards, no passing yards and have the DBs and safeties moving, the d-line moving and linebackers making plays.' I told him I wanted to be that guy. He said 'Dang man, I really like the way you're talking.' After that, he fell in love with the way I was talking. I sent him film and two or three weeks later, coach Shannon offered me."

Nelson didn't have to sell himself his senior year. LSU, Florida, and a number of other SEC schools came looking for him. Although the offer to play for LSU "and beat UF every year" was tempting, the Hurricanes stayed on him hard. And soon, UM could be reaping the benefits. With Darryl Sharpton gone, the Hurricanes do not have a bonafide starting middle linebacker. Going into the spring, most expect senior Colin McCarthy to slide over to the middle and Sean Spence, Jordan Futch and Ramon Buchanon to eat up most of the snaps at outside linebacker. Nelson, the only middle linebacker in a class with five outside linebackers, could ultimately find his way into playing time if he catches on quickly.

"I feel like I'm the best linebacker coming in this class -- and I feel like with the guys I've been around and the knowledge I'm going to be receiving it will be something great for the University of Miami," Nelson said. "It's about time for Coach Shannon to get another ring on his finger. I told him I'm going to do everything in my power, with the last breath in my body to get him that championship ring."

HUGE weekend for Miami Recruiting

This weekend will be HUGE for the Canes. Set to visit are: 4 star OT Shon Coleman (soft commit to Auburn), 4 star DT Ego Ferguson, 5 star OT Seantrel Henderson, and 4 star DT Jeff Whitaker, among probably a few others. With the Pro Bowl being this weekend in Miami, its going to be a great selling factor. It would be great for Randy to have a couple of the 10 Cane pro bowlers to visit these guys and remind them that The U is an NFL factory. Lets hope we can land at least one of these guys.

Canes out of the running for Lemonier

Rivals.com is reporting that 4 star DE Corey Lemonier is down to Auburn or Florida State. Not sure why the Canes were dropped but FSU is going to be hard to beat. Another recruiting disppointment for The U.

McCartney set to visit The U

Rivals.com is reporting that 4 star WR Ivan McCartney is set to announce his college decision Wednesday, February 3rd at 9:30 am at his high school. McCartney will be visiting The U this weekend. He would be a great pickup as he is ranked the #5 best WR. He stands at 6'3" 180 lbs, with some added weight, he'd be a monster, Andre Johnson-esque. Stay tuned...

The U's Top DL Candidates

An article from 3rd & 43-

Rick Petri is on Miami’s radar to be the next Defensive Line Coach. Petri was Miami’s Assistant Defensive Line Coach from 1993-1995. He is currently Kentucky’s Defensive Line Coach were he has built up a strong Line in his time there. Remember when his DE knocked out Tebow?

Petri was up for Defensive Assistant Coach of the Year in 2008. While at Miami he was the Assistant Coach of a Defensive Line that featured Warren Sapp, Kevin Patrick, Kenard Lang and Kenny Holmes. He has been coaching in the SEC since leaving Miami at South Carolina, Ole Miss and Kentucky. Petri has 33 years of coaching experience in College Football.

This looks like it may come down to Kevin Patrick and Rick Petri to become the next Defensive Line Coach. Both have UM ties with Petri having much more accomplishments and experience. At this point Petri may be Miami’s #1 guy.

Hurtt to Louisville

Per Rivals.com: After three years coaching the defensive line at his alma mater, Clint Hurtt is headed to Louisville. CaneSport confirmed he has taken an assistant coaching position there. He was also UM's recruiting coordinator.

DL coach Hurtt on the way out?

Article by Manny Navarro @ Eye on The U

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Rumors have been swirling for days that a few Hurricane assistants could be on their way out. Turns out one of them is true and one isn't.

Clint Hurtt According to a source who spoke with our Susan Miller Degnan moments ago, defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Clint Hurtt has been interviewed by Louisville and is likely going to be given a job on new coach Charlie Strong's staff.

The other rumored coach to be leaving, defensive backs coach Wesley McGriff, told me moments ago he isn't going anywhere and "to please end the rumors."

"Any rumors of me leaving are totally false," Wesley McGriff said by phone Saturday night. "I'm staying at the University of Miami. I haven't spoken to anyone at Kentucky or any other school. I haven't interviewed. I'm a Hurricane. Please let everyone know that."

Hurtt has not answered repeated phone calls. But if we can get him on the phone, we will try to get something from him. Last week, a source told me the Hurricanes are interested in bringing in former UM defensive lineman and USF defensive line coach Kevin Patrick as Hurtt's replacement.

Stay tuned.

* Many Canes fans seem to be happy about this as our DL has been horrible the past couple years and that coach Patrick would be an upgrade as he has coached USF's Selive and Pierre-Saint Louis into possible 1st and 2nd round picks, and I happen to agree. Dont let the door hit you on the way out Hurtt.

Whipple headed to USF?

Sources are saying that we may lose Coach Whipple to USF (head coach) or another job as he has been contacted a lot recently. Not good news at all for the Canes. We need some coaching stability to say the least. Lets keep our fingers crossed...

***(Update) Whipple is staying put for now as USF has hired Skip Holtz from East Carolina.

Canes land sleeper DT in Delmar Taylor

Article from Eye on The U, written by Manny Navarro.

You won't find Delmar Taylor on any national recruiting lists. And unless you attended one of the five high school football games he played in at Miami Beach High this past fall, you probably have never seen him.

Delmar Taylor But assuming all goes well over the next month, the 6-5, 260-pound Bahamian born defensive tackle will be one of the recruits who is a part of the University of Miami's 2010 signing class. Taylor is about as raw and unknown a player as there is in South Florida. But according to our recruiting coordinator Larry Blustein, who saw Taylor play twice, he is very, very talented.

"I came away very impressed with his quickness and strength," Blustein said. "This is an athlete who never takes plays off, which is something any college coach notices right away. This is an athlete who has a real chance to do some big things at the next level."

According to Miami Beach coach Ralph Jimenez, FIU coach Mario Cristobal was the first to spot Taylor and offer him a scholarship. Bowling Green and Western Michigan followed. Memphis was about to offer. But according to Jimenez, when UM assistant coach Wesley McGriff came in a day before students went on vacation for Christmas break and watched film of Taylor, it was love at first sight on both sides.

"If he stays injury free and stays hungry and shows me the way he has shown me since he showed up in January, he could definitely play in the NFL one day," said Jimenez, who has been at Miami Beach High for two seasons. "He has to stay coachable and watch a lot of film. All the things he's done with us, he has to continue to do. But once you meet the kid, you fall in love with him. He didn't even know how to get into a three-point stance when we got him last January. But he's got a lot of talent and a lot of hunger."

Taylor first came to South Florida, according to his uncle Tony Hamilton, when he was 14 and enrolled at Miramar High. But after his mom was involved in a bad car accident, he was forced to return home and work to financially support his mom and now eight-year old brother Malik.

"His mom is better now, which is why he was able to come back," Hamilton said. "But when he went back, he was working with his uncle in plumbing, learning the trade and making whatever money he could to take care of his mom and brother. It was pretty tough. He sacrificed himself."

According to Hamilton, Taylor returned to South Florida his junior year and went out for football at Miramar, where Taylor lives. But he never saw the field because he was still learning how to play. In January 2009, Taylor enrolled him at Miami Beach High, not far from where he works at a nearby Publix. Unfortunately, do to some eligibility issues, the Florida High School Athletic Association only allowed him to play in five games at Miami Beach. Still, Jimenez said, Taylor made his presence felt. He earned best rusher award at the Down & Dirty Camp and played well in his five games.

"One thing he's done is gotten a lot stronger," Jimenez said. "When he first got here he was 6-4, 225. Now, he's 6-5, 260. He was benching 185 and now he's up to 260. He was power cleaning 125 and is at 225. We really pushed himself in the weight room. He was one of the guys who broke records. Now, he's squating 385 pounds. He's a great story."

Jimenez said Taylor has the grades to get into UM. "He's got like a 2.8 GPA and an 18 on his ACT score," Jimenez said. "Believe me, UM wouldn't have offered if they didn't think he could make it into school. He's a qualifier."

Stephen Morris cleared!!!

Per Rivals.com-Stephen Morris found out tonight that he is clear to graduate his high school early and arrive at UM this month and participate in spring drills. This is great news for the Canes as Jacory wont be able to participate in spring drills because of his repaired thumb. AJ Highsmith and Morris will compete for the backup job or maybe even push Jacory...

LB Shirley & OT Coleman set to visit The U

The Canes have two important vistors set to visit the UM campus.

First is OT Shon Coleman, who is currently an Auburn commit but is still taking some visits. Shon is 6'7" 285 lbs and is from Olive Branch, Mississippi. Rivals.com has him as a 4 star recruit and rated the 10th best offensive lineman. Seems like Randy cant get enough offensive lineman in this class as he is still recruiting quite a few guys even though we have 5 OL commits already.

Second is Josh Shirley(pictured above). Josh is a 6'2" 225 lb linebacker from Fontana, California. Rivals.com has him rated a 4 star recruit and the 8th best linebacker. We could really use Shirley, especially after the decommitment of Javarie Johnson.

Be sure to read Manny Navarro's take on the Canes current recruiting slump at Eye on The U.

Canes lose LB commit Javarie Johnson

According to Rivals.com the Canes have lost a LB commit in Javarie Johnson. Johnson decommited and decided to commit to his hometown Maryland Terrapins (he's from D.C.) This is not good news as Johnson was considered a 4 star recruit and one of our top prospects. Not sure what's goin on in Coral Gables but The U better get a move on it as we are barely ranked in the top 20 with our current recruiting class which will drop even more now. National signing day is February 3rd.

LB Kelvin Cain Commits to The U

The Canes received a commitment from LB Kelvin Cain today. I cant seem to find much about this kid except that he's 6'4" and 215 lbs and hes from Clovis, California. I cant find any ratings on this guy either on any of the recruiting websites. Im assuming Randy sees something in this kid that others dont. According to Rivals.com he only has offers from Miami, Nevada, Portland State, and San Jose State, yikes! Man I dont even know what to think, but I guess its fair to give the guy a chance. If I find out anything else on this guy, I will be sure to post it on here asap.

*Just watched a video on youtube of this guy and his team and Im definitely not impressed, c'mon Randy!!!

Canes in the mix for Latwan Anderson, decision Saturday

DB/S Latwan Anderson from Cleveland, Ohio is set to announce his decision on Saturday at the U.S. Army All American Bowl. Anderson is considered a 4 star recruit, he stands at 5'10" and weighs 185 lbs. His 40 time is listed at 4.38.
The finalists are Ohio State, West Virginia, North Carolina, and The U. Many people say Ohio State will be tough to beat for his services. Again, the Canes can use some more DB's and this would be a huge pickup. The U is in the mix for quite a few players in the All American Bowl, lets hope we can land at least one.

***As of 1/9/2010: Safety Latwan Anderson pledged to sign with the Mountaineers Saturday during the first quarter of the Army All-American Game.

Canes get Seantrel Henderson's Final Visit

Good news for the Canes as they get 5 star OT Seantrel Henderson's Final Visit. Seantrel has already visited Ohio State, Notre Dame, USC and Florida. We need to make a lasting impression on this guy, we land him and our OL will be stout next year, and as we all know the more time Jacory has to throw the more dominant he is. Not only that but our stable of running backs next year can benefit even more from a great offensive line.
C'mon Randy lets do this!!!

Canes hard after DT Calvin Smith

The U is hard after Tennessee commit DT Calvin Smith. We are in desperate need of some DT's. Calvin is actually from our own backyard in Hialeah, so hopefully he will have a change in heart and decide to stay home. He is rated a 4 star by Rivals.com and is listed at 6'4, 265 lbs, he is ranked the 25th best DT in the 2010 class. Lets all keep our fingers crossed and hope that we can sway this guy.

Jacory to have surgery on his thumb

Written by Manny Navarro

University of Miami quarterback Jacory Harris will have surgery to repair torn ligaments on his right thumb and will be out at least a month, likely leaving him out of passing drills during spring football, according to a source close to the situation.

Late Monday night, Harris sent out this message through his Twitter account: ``Bad news I guess. . . . A.J. and Stephen have fun.''

A.J. Highsmith is UM's backup quarterback. Stephen Morris is the quarterback from Miami Monsignor Pace expected to sign with the Hurricanes in February.

By Tuesday morning, Harris' Twitter message was no longer posted. But according to a source, Monday afternoon was when Harris learned he would need surgery. It is believed he had an MRI on Monday.

Harris was on crutches for at least a couple days after the Hurricanes' 20-14 loss to Wisconsin in the Champs Sports Bowl. Harris also strained ligaments in his ankle and knee. He slightly injured the foot on his other leg during the game when a Wisconsin defender stepped on it. The source said none of those injuries, however, will require surgery.

Harris injured the thumb on his throwing hand when he banged it against a helmet during the first quarter at North Carolina on Nov. 14. He threw a season-high four interceptions in the 33-24 loss to the Tar Heels.

His thumb bothered him the rest of the season.

Harris still became the first quarterback at UM since Ken Dorsey in 2002 to throw for 3,000 yards in a season. He finished the year 242 for 406 with 3,352 yards, 24 touchdowns and 17 interceptions and was named a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Quarterback Award.

If expected signee Morris does not graduate from Pace in two weeks, the Hurricanes will have only one scholarship quarterback at full strength when spring football begins the last week of February. Walk-on Spencer Whipple, the son of offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, is the scout team quarterback.

Pace, a private school, does not usually permit its students to graduate early.

Miami Herald sportswriter Susan Miller Degnan contributed to this report.

Top Juniors Will Return

Looks like all the Canes top Juniors will return for next season. Allen Bailey just announced that he is 'definitely' coming back. Leonard Hankerson and Orlando Franklin have already officially announced that they are coming back. The only other junior that considered leaving was Graig Cooper. We are still waiting for news on his ACL, which is probably a pretty bad tear from what I've been reading. I have no clue what Coop will do, the draft is highly unlikely as players only have until Jan 15th to declare for the draft and the combines are at the end of February, Coop will be on crutches at that time. So I guess he can try to medical redshirt next year? I have no clue, his incident is very unfortunate and happened at a really crappy time. I've read that he has already contacted Willis McGahee and as well all know The U is family and Im sure once Willis is done with the playoffs he will train with Coop at sometime in the offseason.

So all in all, lookin good for the Canes, as we will have some leadership next year along with added depth. All of these Juniors had been great in 2009 and will be much needed in 2010.

Canes a finalist for DT Jeffrey Whitaker

Rivals.com is reporting that the Canes are a finalist for 4 star DT Jeffrey Whitaker. He may or may not make his decision at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, so be on the lookout on Saturday the 9th. He has narrowed his list down to: Auburn, Cal, Georgia, North Carolina, and THE U. We could really use a DT since Nix and Chandler decommited, Chandler is taking visits again after committing to USF so dont count on this guy coming back to The U come signing day. We NEED DT's!

Here is Whitaker's Info:
Ht: 6-4 Wt: 295

High School:
Warner Robins HS
(Warner Robins, GA)

Also, ESPN is reporting that Brandon Willis is down to just North Carolina and UCLA. It was thought that the Canes were in the mix. Brandon Linder has been trying to sway Willis to come to The U, he then decommitted from Tennessee, so who knows what is going on. Stranger things have happened so the only way to find out is to tune in on Saturday for his announcement.

Canes in the mix for Seantrel Henderson's Final Visit

The Canes are in the mix for OT Seantrel Henderson's final visit. This guy is a beast. Seantrel is the #4 overall rated prospect, #1 OT and is rated a 5 star by ESPN. He stands at 6'7" 295 lbs and is from St. Paul, Minnesota. Some of the teams in the mix are Miami, Ohio State, Florida, USC, Notre Dame and Oklahoma. The Canes got some stiff competition from all the big boys and I'll be surprised if we can pull this guy but you never know.

Look for Seantrel in the U.S. Army All American Bowl this Saturday, Jan 9th.

Brandon Willis Decommits from Tennessee

Rivals.com is reporting DE/DT Brandon Willis has decommited from Tennessee. The Canes have been hard after this guy and would be a huge pickup, especially if they decide to play him at DT, although he is rather small for a DT and will likely play DE. Willis is considered a 4 star prospect and is considering FSU, North Carolina, Miami, UCLA and Tennessee. He is expected to announce his decision at the US Army All American Bowl on Jan 9th.

*** As of 1/9/2010 DL Brandon Willis recommitted to Tennessee during the third quarter of the Army All-American Game.

From the looks of this commit list, looks like Randy is recruiting size AND speed, the average size of this OL is 6'5 and 287 lbs. The smallest recruit is 5'10" and only 2 recruits under 6'0". Speed is EVERYWHERE, I mean even our DE's run 4.7 40's. Our RB's are huge except Clements, same with our TE's. Our LB's and DB's are fast all around the table as well. I see whats goin on here, throw the stars out the window. And, all of these numbers are before Swasey gets ahold of them in the weight room.

(I will update the recruit list after every new commit)

Under Armour Game Thoughts

Unfortunately the Under Armour Game was basically the 'Future Gator Players' game. As much as it sucks, its the truth. The only uncommitted prospect the Canes had a chance at (DE-D.Easley), choose the Gators out of nowhere. Future Gators, Dowling and Dorsey, straight up balled out from the safety position. Prospects seem to choose the present 'hot' teams, whether there are coaching changes or not. Even FSU has a nice recruiting class set up, which baffles me, and all I can think of is that their tradition and location is helping them out. The Canes recruiting class isnt bad, but its not great. But what Randy Shannon IS doing is building depth at positions of need. This is why we had 2 offensive linemen in the Under Armour game. And if you watched the Canes bowl game, the OL had a huge part in that loss. Randy doesn't look at star ratings when it comes to recruiting, as he has stated, he knows the South Florida kids and coaches much better than his counterparts. But what says our 18 '3 star' recruits dont turn into 5 stars by the end of their first year? I mean yes their chances may be smaller than someone that is already labeled a '5 star', but dont count em out. I've seen numberous 5 star busts. Anyway, stay tuned as I will update any recruiting news that I hear. Btw National Signing Day is Feb. 3rd, only a month away. Randy better get to it!

(per ESPN.com)
• Future Miami running back Storm Johnson didn't have much room to roam on Saturday, but continued to show his vision, quick feet in the hole and acceleration. He was the game's leading rusher with 30 yards on seven carries. Look for Johnson to play early and often for the Hurricanes next year.

Tune into the Under Armour Game

Make sure you tune into the 2010 Under Armour All-American Game at 11am on ESPN.

There will be a couple of future Canes in the game as well as some prospects that we are still recruiting. I made a list of players that Canes fans should keep an eye on.

White Team:

WR #3 Kadron Boone- He is a soft verbal to Texas Tech right now but with the coaching change there the Canes are trying to swoop in and sway him.

Hometown Ocala, FL
